Andean Wine & Culture Journey

Our winter break journey through South America was incredible. We explored the elegant streets of Buenos Aires before venturing into the stunning landscapes of Patagonia’s lake district. The trip took us through two different wine regions where we enjoyed amazing Malbecs in Mendoza and discovered unique wineries nestled in Chile’s beautiful Millahue Valley. We stayed in some remarkable places – thoughtfully designed to complement their natural surroundings. Between wine tastings, we wandered through Santiago and the colorful coastal town of ValparaĆ­so, taking in the art, history, and distinct charm of each place. Sharing these experiences with my family made everything even more meaningful – creating memories we’ll cherish for years to come.

We flew almost everywhere – starting with our international flight to Buenos Aires, then hopping on a domestic flight to reach the beautiful lake district of Bariloche in northern Patagonia. From there, we flew to Mendoza’s wine country, and then crossed the Andes to Santiago, Chile. We drove to the Millahue Valley before heading back to Santiago for our flight home.

Our day started with an early morning flight that gave us incredible views of Argentina’s terrain near Salta. We were amazed by the diverse landscapes below – from dry, arid regions to dramatic snow-capped mountains. The aerial perspective of northern Argentina’s varied topography gave us a wonderful introduction to the country’s natural beauty.

We stopped at a local bakery in Buenos Aires for a delicious morning treat. The sweet alfajores filled with dulce de leche were delightful, along with the variety of freshly-baked pastries. It was interesting to see the European influences in these traditional Argentine treats as we got our first taste of the city’s culinary heritage.

The Teatro Colón was truly impressive. This world-class opera house features gorgeous French and Italian-influenced architecture throughout. Walking through the ornate interior spaces, we appreciated the historical significance of this landmark that has hosted remarkable performances since 1908. The craftsmanship and attention to detail were evident in every corner of the building.

We took some time to explore Plaza Francia, which offered a peaceful break from the city’s energy. The ancient rubber tree created a lovely shaded area within the park. Wandering the pathways and finding quiet spots to sit while taking in the greenery made for a tranquil retreat in the middle of bustling Buenos Aires.

El Ateneo Grand Splendid was a highlight of our Buenos Aires explorations. This bookstore in a converted theater features stunning ornate ceiling details, with old theater boxes transformed into cozy reading nooks. We enjoyed browsing the extensive collection of books while admiring how they’ve repurposed the stage into an elegant cafĆ©, preserving the building’s theatrical heritage.

We visited an important Jewish cultural site in the Recoleta neighborhood. The architecture was beautiful, and we learned about the history of Argentina’s Jewish community, one of the largest in Latin America. The tour provided insights into this significant aspect of the country’s cultural heritage.

We embraced the Buenos Aires café culture with an afternoon coffee break near the Teatro Colón. Sitting with our coffees and pastries while watching the city life around us felt like an authentic local experience. It was a pleasant moment to pause and enjoy the atmosphere of this vibrant city.

In the evening, we headed to the rooftop of the Alvear Palace Hotel to catch the sunset over Buenos Aires. The view from this elegant Belle Ɖpoque building was spectacular as the city transitioned from day to night. The changing colors in the sky complemented the refined atmosphere of this luxurious hotel setting.

Dinner at the Faena Hotel introduced us to Argentine cuisine in a sophisticated setting. We sampled premium local wines paired with handmade empanadas and fresh olive oil. The meal showcased the country’s renowned culinary traditions in an elegant environment.

Our day concluded with a tango show at the Faena Hotel. The dancers performed in elaborate costumes with impressive technical precision and emotional intensity. Watching this traditional Argentine dance performed live was a captivating cultural experience and the perfect ending to our first day in Buenos Aires.

We started our day with an elaborate breakfast at our upscale hotel. The extensive buffet offered everything from fresh pastries and fruits to various cheeses and other gourmet items. It was a wonderful introduction to Argentina’s attention to culinary detail and gave us plenty of energy for the day ahead.

Mid-morning, we stopped at a charming cafĆ© for some artisanal desserts and macarons. The intimate setting provided a perfect backdrop to enjoy these sweet treats that showcased Argentina’s European-influenced pastry traditions. The delicate flavors and beautiful presentation made for a delightful break.

For lunch, we had a truly authentic Buenos Aires experience at the legendary Pizzeria GüerrĆ­n. Established in 1932, this iconic spot represents the city’s strong Italian heritage. We watched the traditional pizza-making process in action before enjoying the classic porteƱo-style pizza that they’ve been serving for generations. The bustling atmosphere added to the feeling that we were experiencing a genuine local institution.

In the afternoon, we explored the iconic Puerto Madero area with its distinctive sail-like bridge and modern waterfront development. Walking through this revitalized docklands district, we admired how Buenos Aires has blended contemporary architecture with historic port buildings that have been transformed into upscale restaurants and offices. The contrast between old and new created an interesting urban landscape.

Our cultural exploration through San Telmo’s historic streets took us to several notable spots. We visited artisanal shops, admired street art, and experienced the famous covered market. Our journey included stops at La Casa del Dulce de Leche – Coffee, GalerĆ­a de la Defensa, and the historic Mercado de San Telmo with its impressive iron and glass architecture. Walking down the iconic Calle Defensa, known for its weekend antique fair and colonial buildings, gave us a real sense of the area’s heritage.

We took a refreshing break for some artisanal ice cream at a modern cafĆ©. Argentina’s helado tradition, which has Italian gelato influences but with local twists, offered a cool respite during our day of explorations. Sampling the various flavors was a delicious way to experience another aspect of the local food culture.

During our leisurely walk through the upscale Recoleta neighborhood, we noticed Argentine flags proudly displayed on lampposts along the avenue. The national colors of light blue and white created a striking visual against the sky. We passed through Plazoleta CortĆ”zar, also known as Plaza Serrano, which serves as the heart of Palermo Soho and a hub for the area’s trendy boutiques, bars, and restaurants. The neighborhood had a lively atmosphere as day transitioned to evening.

As evening approached, we visited one of Buenos Aires’ most photographed spots – the green topiary ‘BA’ letters with the famous Obelisco in the background. The early evening light cast a warm glow over the plaza where both tourists and locals were gathering. This quintessential Buenos Aires landmark has become a symbol of the city’s vibrant identity and made for a memorable photo opportunity.

As night fell over Buenos Aires, we took an evening walk through the downtown area to see the city’s impressive architecture illuminated by ambient lighting. The neoclassical details of historic buildings glowed warmly against the darkening sky, including the Palacio de Justicia and Teatro Cervantes. The blend of modern urban elements and classic design showed us why Buenos Aires is often called the ‘Paris of South America.’

We ended our day with an elegant New Year’s Eve dinner at the acclaimed Fervor restaurant. The celebration featured multiple courses of fine Argentine cuisine served in stylish surroundings. It was the perfect setting to welcome the new year, with festive midnight celebrations adding to the special atmosphere of the evening.

We started our day with a lovely breakfast at Alvear CafĆ© in Buenos Aires. The presentation was quite impressive, with an artful honeycomb display and beautifully arranged fresh fruits. The refined atmosphere of this upscale cafĆ© gave us a perfect final taste of the capital’s culinary scene before moving on to our next destination.

Our journey continued with a domestic flight from Buenos Aires to Bariloche. While enjoying the in-flight refreshments, we watched through the windows as Argentina’s diverse landscape unfolded beneath us. The transition from urban metropolis to the natural beauty of Patagonia was striking – a visual reminder of this country’s remarkable geographic variety.

Upon arriving at Villa Beluno Hotel & Spa in San Pedro, we were immediately drawn to the elegantly decorated rooms with their stunning lake views. The hotel had added festive Christmas touches throughout, creating a warm welcome. The combination of sophisticated design and natural beauty created an immediate sense of both luxury and tranquility after our travel day.

The evening offered perfect lighting conditions for capturing Bariloche’s natural beauty. We spent time photographing local wildlife, flowers, and the stunning Nahuel Huapi Lake. From our vantage points at Villa Beluno, we could really appreciate the rich biodiversity and dramatic landscapes that make this Patagonian region so special.

We explored Villa Beluno’s charming boutique cafĆ© with its inviting dining spaces and unique dĆ©cor featuring marble statues and wrought iron details. The blue furnishings and wooden tables created a warm atmosphere throughout. We even got a glimpse behind the scenes in the kitchen, watching the chefs at work and gaining insight into the culinary craftsmanship that goes into the hotel’s renowned dining.

We discovered Villa Beluno’s luxurious private theater, an exclusive entertainment venue complete with tiered seating and elegant wall dĆ©cor. The plush couches and sophisticated lighting created quite an immersive environment, while the state-of-the-art audiovisual technology transformed simple viewing into something much more special.

We spent some quiet time in the evening reviewing information about the region’s lakeside attractions. We started our day with an invigorating hike through dense forest paths leading to Cerro Campanario. After making our way through the woods, we continued our ascent on the Aerosilla Cerro Campanario chairlift.

During our morning exploration, we came across a fascinating snake-like conifer tree that showcased the region’s distinctive Patagonian flora.

At the summit of Cerro Campanario, we were treated to one of Bariloche’s most celebrated viewpoints. The 360-degree panorama revealed spectacular vistas of lakes, mountains, and forests in every direction. We took our time photographing the magnificent Andean scenery from this vantage point, which we learned is often rated among the world’s best views.

We took the chairlift back down from Cerro Campanario, enjoying final sweeping views of the landscape below. From there, we continued our journey toward the famous Circuito Chico route.

Our drive along the famous Circuito Chico route included stops at various viewpoints, particularly Punto PanorĆ”mico, which offered spectacular photography opportunities of the lake and mountain vistas. As we continued, the drive provided constantly changing perspectives of Bariloche’s natural beauty. We also caught glimpses of the iconic Hotel Llao Llao nestled perfectly within the landscape.

In the afternoon, we hiked along the trails around BahĆ­a López and Mirador Brazo Tristeza, navigating dramatic rocky outcrops to reach stunning viewpoints. The paths rewarded us with spectacular vistas of both Lago Nahuel Huapi and Lago Moreno. We took numerous photos of the crystal-clear waters contrasting with the surrounding Andean peaks – each turn in the trail seemed to offer an even more impressive view.

Late afternoon brought a peaceful interlude at Lago Nahuel Huapi, where we observed local geese in their natural habitat and watched kayakers glide across the tranquil waters. This provided a more relaxed pace after our day’s adventures, giving us time to appreciate the serene natural setting before heading back to our hotel.

Returning to Villa Beluno Hotel & Spa, we took some time to enjoy the property’s beautiful gardens, greenhouse, and luxury amenities including the indoor pool. The elegant grounds offered stunning views of the lake, and we appreciated how the property combined natural beauty with sophisticated comfort in this lovely San Pedro setting.

The meal progressed from artfully presented appetizers to decadent desserts, with each course showcasing local culinary artistry. The boat navigated quite close to the falls on Lago Nahuel Huapi, allowing us to get intimate views of this natural wonder in the Puerto López area. The sound of the rushing water added another dimension to the experience.

We spent some time exploring Puerto FrĆ­as along a network of forest trails that wound through bamboo groves, ancient trees, and pristine streams. The path led us to Cascada Frey, where the refreshing waters looked like a perfect swimming spot. The unspoiled natural surroundings made us feel like we were discovering something special away from the typical tourist areas.

We enjoyed an exquisite dining experience aboard the vessel, surrounded by breathtaking views of Lago Nahuel Huapi and its mountain backdrop. Our meal featured beautifully arranged dishes, from savory appetizers to decadent chocolate brownies with fruit garnishes. We watched through the windows as the scenery gradually transitioned from Patagonia’s lakes region to the distinctive terrain of Mendoza’s wine country.

Upon arriving at Cavas Wine Lodge, we were greeted warmly and treated to an elegant lunch experience. The meal featured artisanal breads, creative seasonal dishes, and fresh salads, all served in a setting that immediately showcased the property’s hospitality and culinary excellence. We experienced a comprehensive winery tour at Lamadrid Estate, where our guide led us through their state-of-the-art production facilities and atmospheric barrel rooms. Our journey through this Las Compuertas vineyard revealed both traditional and innovative winemaking methods. The tour culminated in expertly guided tasting sessions where we sampled the estate’s distinctive terroir-driven wines and gained a deeper appreciation for the region’s viticulture.

We participated in an immersive culinary workshop at Los Bocheros restaurant in Las Compuertas that taught us the secrets of traditional Argentine cuisine. The hands-on experience allowed us to prepare authentic regional dishes, followed by a lively communal asado (grilling session). The class concluded with a convivial lunch featuring all the freshly prepared specialties we’d helped create. The peaceful morning atmosphere gave us a perfect final glimpse of Argentina’s premier wine country before our departure.

We concluded our vineyard experience with an alfresco breakfast amid this beautiful setting, which included an unexpected but delightful visit from a friendly local cat.

Our journey from Mendoza to Santiago featured a spectacular aerial crossing of the Andes Mountains. From the aircraft windows, we enjoyed breathtaking views of jagged, snow-capped peaks, including the towering Aconcagua, which we learned is the highest mountain in the Americas. After this stunning visual experience, we landed at Santiago International Airport ready to explore a new country.

We spent part of the afternoon exploring Santiago’s bohemian Barrio Lastarria, where cobblestone streets were lined with cafĆ©s and cultural venues. Our tour included visits to the striking contemporary architecture of the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Centre with its impressive art installations, as well as the historic Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, which showcased Chilean and international art in a beautiful neoclassical building.

We climbed Cerro Santa Lucia, a verdant escape rising from central Santiago with terraced gardens and historic stone structures. Following the winding pathways through the landscaped grounds, we reached viewpoints that rewarded us with sweeping panoramas of Santiago’s urban landscape set against the majestic Andes mountains in the distance. The park provided a refreshing break from the bustling city below.

We explored the historic heart of Santiago around Plaza de Armas, where we saw colonial architecture standing alongside more modern urban elements. Our tour extended to nearby Barrio La Bolsa with its European-influenced buildings, the iconic STGO Monument where we stopped for photos, and the impressive neoclassical Palacio de La Moneda, Chile’s presidential palace. We even enjoyed a refreshing ice cream stop that provided a sweet interlude during our exploration.

As evening fell, we headed to The Singular Santiago, Lastarria Hotel to unwind at their sophisticated rooftop setting. From this elevated vantage point, we watched Santiago’s illuminated skyline stretch toward the silhouette of mountains on the horizon. It was a tranquil moment to reflect on all we’d seen during our first day in Chile.

We ended our day with dinner at Osaka in Vitacura, where we experienced an artful culinary journey through Nikkei cuisine, the celebrated Peruvian-Japanese fusion. The multi-course meal featured meticulously prepared sushi, innovative hot dishes, and creative desserts. Each plate showcased the restaurant’s commitment to blending traditional techniques with contemporary presentation, giving us a memorable introduction to Santiago’s sophisticated dining scene.

We started our day exploring Recoleta’s vibrant street art scene with its colorful murals throughout the neighborhood. Our journey began at the eye-catching Empanadas Ʊa Matea storefront with its distinctive chef artwork, then continued through streets showcasing diverse murals featuring intricate floral designs and cultural themes that reflected Chile’s artistic heritage. The neighborhood had a really distinct creative energy.

We rode the historic funicular railway to Cerro San Cristóbal, which offered a scenic ascent from the charming base station. As our vintage car climbed through lush hillside vegetation, we watched panoramic views of Santiago gradually unfold below us. This century-old transportation method combined technical marvel with natural beauty, giving us a memorable approach to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
